The Immaculate Heart of Mary bracelet carries a silver-tone Italian medal of Mary’s heart — pierced by the sword foretold by Simeon and crowned with roses — handwoven onto an adjustable cord in Medjugorje by women who pray as they tie each knot. It’s a wearable act of consecration to the Mother of God, the Marian counterpart to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the very devotion Our Lady asked the world to embrace at Fatima in 1917.

The devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary was formally promoted in the seventeenth century by St John Eudes, who composed the first Mass and Office honoring Mary’s Heart alongside the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Its iconography rests on Luke 2:35 — Simeon’s prophecy that “a sword shall pierce your own soul too” — and Mary’s heart is shown encircled by roses or flames, often crowned with thorns, signifying her unique participation in her Son’s Passion. At Fatima, the Second Secret entrusted to Lúcia, Francisco, and Jacinta Marto carried Our Lady’s request: “Jesus wishes to establish in the world devotion to my Immaculate Heart.” In response, Pope Pius XII consecrated the world to the Immaculate Heart in 1942, St John Paul II renewed that consecration in 1984, and Pope Francis consecrated Russia and Ukraine to the Immaculate Heart of Mary on 25 March 2022. The feast day of the Immaculate Heart of Mary falls on the Saturday after the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart — the two Hearts honored back-to-back — and the First Saturdays devotion Sister Lúcia transmitted continues to draw the faithful to monthly reparation.
