The Pope Francis bracelet carries an oval Pope Francis medal struck with the Latin inscription “FRANCISCUS PP” — Pope Francis — a commemorative tribute to the 265th successor of St. Peter and the first Jesuit Pope in the Church’s history. Elected on March 13, 2013, the former Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Buenos Aires became the first pontiff from Latin America, the first from the Southern Hemisphere, and the first to take the name Francis — chosen in honour of St. Francis of Assisi, with priorities rooted in humility, poverty, and care for creation. His papacy ended with his death on April 21, 2025, after 12 years of pastoral leadership that earned him the title «the People’s Pope.» His papal coat of arms is a small visual theology: at the centre, the IHS Christogram of the Society of Jesus — Iesus Hominum Salvator, Jesus Saviour of Mankind — surmounted by a cross piercing the H, with three nails of the Passion below; an eight-pointed star for the Virgin Mary; and a spikenard flower for St. Joseph, a deeply Hispanic iconographic tradition that honoured Francis’s Latin American roots. His motto, «Miserando atque eligendo» — «By having mercy and by choosing him» — was drawn from the Venerable Bede’s homily on the calling of St. Matthew: «Jesus saw the tax collector and, because he saw him through the eyes of mercy, chose him.» Francis carried his own Marian devotion to the end: he kept the Miraculous Medal pinned to his clothing throughout his pontificate, telling reporters: «I’ve worn the medal constantly ever since. I’ll wear it to my grave.» He was, in fact, buried with twelve papal medals — one for each year of his papacy.
